Newry, Armagh / Down

Newry is a city, lying on both banks of the River Clanrye (aka Newry River), partly in County Down and partly in County Armagh. It is within the townlands of Carneyhough, Ballynacraig, Drumcashellone, Damolly, Commons and Greenan (all in County Down), and within the townlands of Ballinlare, Carnagat, Lisdrumgullion, Derry Beg, Drumalane and Lisdrumliska (all in County Armagh), all in the civil parish of Newry. A Cistercian Abbey was founded on the east bank of the Newry River (in County Down) in 1144 and dissolved in 1548. In 1552, Nicholas Bagenal, Marshal of the English army in Ireland, was granted ownership of the former abbey lands, building the fortified house Bagenal's Castle on the site. Newry grew as a market town and a garrison, and became a port in 1742 when the Newry Canal was opened. The city is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.

The earliest depiction of a settlement on the river's west bank (Ballybot), in County Antrim, is from the 1703 Nevil Survey of Newry. The Antrim bank developed quickly after the canal opened, as a quayside and industrial area. St Patrick's Church (C of I) was built in 1578 on Bagenal's instructions, though largely rebuilt in 1866. The Cathedral of SS Patrick and Colman (RC) was designed and built by Thomas Duff opening in 1829. Newry Town Hall (1894), designed by by William Batt in neoclassical style, was built on a specially-constructed bridge across the Newry River, half in each county. Newry was made a city by letters patent in 2002.
