Exeter is a city on the River Exe and the county town of Devon. The city has been continuously inhabited since pre-Roman times. Once the been the centre of the Dumnonii tribe, it was conquered by the Romans and named Isca Dumnoriorum. The line of most of the Roma walls remains, incorporated within the mediæval city walls. The Saxons occupied the town from the 8th century, calling it Escanceaster. Rougemont Castle was built by William the Conqueror, following the rebellion of 1068. The founding of Exeter Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Peter, dates from 1050. The present building was complete by about 1410. The city is within the council area of Exeter (Devon).
