Portsmouth, Hampshire   (City)

Portsmouth is a city in Hampshire. Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy, for which it is the greatest and most famous port. The city stands on its own island, Portsea Island, facing the English Channel, with a capacious, sheltered, natural harbour, which has been its foundation and fortune. Portsmouth was established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. The first ever drydock was constructed by Henry VII in 1496. Portsmouth was England's first line of defence during the attempted French invasion in 1545. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world. The 19th and 20th centuries saw the expansion of Portsmouth across Portsea Island and onto a small area of the mainland. Portsmouth was awarded city status in 1926. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard contains several historic ships including the HMS Victory and the remains of the Mary Rose. Portsmouth is within the council area of Portsmouth.
