Newport, Shropshire   (Town)

Newport is a market town in Shropshire. The Normans planned a New Town called Novo Burgo between the older settlements of Edgmond and Plesc. The first market charter was granted by Henry I. The main street follows the Norman design, giving it a distinctive, long, wide High Street. The Puleston Cross is a 14th-century butter cross standing near to the Church of St Nicholas. Newport, Pembrokeshire   (Town)

Newport is a small town in Pembrokeshire, standing on the south bank of the tidal reach of the River Nevern and climbing the hill behind. The town looks out over the estuary of the River Nevern. Here a broad beach reaches out into the river, which beach gives the town its Welsh name. Newport is known for the Carreg Coetan Arthur burial chamber and, standing at the top of Castle Hill, Newport Castle. The town is within the council area of Pembrokeshire.

Newport, Monmouthshire   (City)

Newport is the largest urban area and the only city in Monmouthshire. Newport has been a port since mediæval times when the first Newport Castle was built by the Normans. It grew significantly in the 19th century when its port became the focus of coal exports. In the 20th century, the docks declined in importance, but Newport remained an important centre for manufacturing and engineering. Latterly its economy is bolstered as part of the M4 corridor high-technology cluster. It was granted city status in 2002. Newport was the site of the last large-scale armed insurrection in Great Britain, the Newport Rising of 1839. The city is within the council area of Newport.

Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire   (Town)

Newport Pagnell is a town in Buckinghamshire. The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Neuport'. Tickford Bridge over the River Ouzel (1810) is one of the last cast-iron bridges in Britain that still carries road traffic. From 1954 until 2007, the town was the home to the sports car manufacturer Aston Martin. Although part of the new town of Milton Keynes since its inception in 1967, Newport Pagnell is separated from the rest of the urban area of Milton Kenyes by the M1 motorway. The town is within the council area of Milton Keynes.
