Coulsdon, Surrey (Town)
Couldsdon is a suburban town in Surrey. The town developed around the pre-existing hamlet of Smithambottom following the opening of Smitham railway station in 1904, the name Coulsdon being that of the parish and of the village to the south. The modern town centre lies around what was Lion Green. St Andrew's Church dates from 1914. The original village, now known as Old Coulsdon, now forms the southern part of the town. From 1915-1965, for local government purposes, Coulsdon and its neighbouring town of Purley formed the basis of Coulsdon and Purley urban district. During this period, especially the inter-war years, both towns saw large-scale suburban development. The town is within the council area of Croydon.
