Glasgow, Lanarkshire / Renfrewshire / Dunbartonshire   (City)

Glasgow is a city located on the banks of the River Clyde. It is situate primarily in Lanarkshire but spreads into Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire. Expanding from the mediæval bishopric and royal burgh, and the establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, it became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. From the 18th century onwards, the city grew as one of Britain's main hubs of oceanic trade. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, Glasgow and the surrounding region became one of the world's pre-eminent centres of chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry. Today it is one of Europe's top financial centres and is home to many of Scotland's leading businesses. It is within the council area of City of Glasgow.
