Blackburn Cathedral, Lancashire   (Ecclesiastical Monument)

Blackburn Cathedral (formally the Cathedral Church of St Mary) is a Church of England cathedral in Blackburn, Lancashire. It is the seat of the Bishop of Blackburn. The cathedral site has been home to a church for over a thousand years. The present church was built in 1826 and designed by John Palmer. It was raised to cathedral status in 1926 and much expanded over several decades until completion in 1977. The lantern tower, which consists of 56 different panes of coloured glass, with a modernist slender aluminium spire, was completed in 1967. The cathedral is within the council area of Blackburn with Darwen.
