The Cockpit, Westmorland   (Heritage Site)

The Cockpit is a stone circle 1,000 feet above sea level on Askham Fell in Westmorland. It is thought that the Cockpit was created during the bronze age and consists of a low stone bank about 90 feet in diameter. Set into this bank are around 75 stones, some standing, some fallen, with the tallest stone being about 3 feet in height. Historians disagree on the purpose of stone circles, and it remains a mystery as to whether the Cockpit was intended for rituals, a sign of landownership, or something else. The name comes from its brief use as a cock-fighting ring. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
