Boroughbridge, Yorkshire   (Town)

Boroughbridge is a small town in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It lies on the south bank of the River Ure. The town grew around the bridge over the Ure, on the route the old Roman road Dere Street (later the Great North Road). Its location made it an important stage for stagecoaches. The Battle of Boroughbridge (1322) saw King Edward II defeat Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, a leader of the baronial revolt against the king. The town is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
