Y Felinheli, Caernarfonshire

Y Felinheli is a coastal village, located beside the Menai Strait in Caernarfonshire. The area was developed by the Assheton-Smith family as a port to export slate from around 1793. The name Port Dinorwic was coined with the completion of the Dinorwic Railway in 1824, linking the port to the Dinorwic quarry. Since commercial exports ended in the 1960s, the Welsh name Y Felinheli has been widely promoted for use in English-language contexts too. Nonetheless, the English name is still used, notably in relation to the maritime industry, e.g. in the port Dinorwic Marina and the Port Dinorwic Sailing Club. The village is within the council area of Gwynedd.
