Wymondley Priory, Hertfordshire

Wymondley Priory is a former priory and later country house near Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire. It was Founded in 1205-7 by Richard de Argentien first as a hospital and soon after as a priory of Augustinian Canons, dedicated to St Mary. It was dissolved in 1536 and granted to James Nedham, who adapted the priory buildings into a mansion (The Priory). The surviving house consists of the west part of the unaisled nave of the priory church with 16th-century and later extensions and alterations. A mediæval barn also survives. The priory and barn are located within the priory's moated enclosure. The garden and garden walls around the present manor are considered to be located on the foundations of the priory buildings and the walls include quantities of carved mediæval stonework. The monument is within the council area of North Hertfordshire (Hertfordshire).
