Wray Castle, Lancashire
Wray Castle is a Victorian Gothic country house on the banks of the northern end of Lake Windermere at Claife in Lancashire. It was built around 1840 by Dr Dawson, a prominent Liverpool surgeon. Dawson set about creating a romantic, idealised castle on a rise overlooking the west shore of the lake. The house has an association with author Beatrix Potter, who spent a summer holiday there when she was 16 in 1882. In 1929 Wray Castle and 64 acres of land were given to the National Trust by Sir Robert Noton Barclay the owner at that time. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
