Woolston, Hampshire

Woolston is a former village that is now a suburb of Southampton, Hampshire, located on the eastern bank of the River Itchen. In Domesday it appears as Olvestune, signifying ‘the tun of Olaf’, perhaps a reference to Olaf I, King of Norway 995-1000. The hamlet grew from the 19th century, especially around the shipbuilding and aviation industries. Woolston was incorporated into the borough of Southampton in 1920. Woolston Floating Bridge was a cable ferry that crossed the Itchen to Southampton from 1836-1977. Woolston is within the council area of Southampton.
