Woodcroft Castle, Northamptonshire

Woodcroft Castle is a moated mediæval castle near Etton, Northamptonshire, in the Soke of Peterborough area. It was originally built by the Woodcroft family around 1280, and much of what remains, such as the circular tower and the gatehouse, dates back to then. The Woodcroft family owned the Castle until 1545, when it was sold to Lord Fitzwilliam. His family would own the castle for the next 450 years, finally selling it in 1988. Woodcroft Castle was briefly held by the Royalists during the Civil War and was attacked and taken by Parliamentarian forces in June 1648. Dr Michael Hudson, commander of the Royalist garrison, was killed 6 June 1648 at the end of the siege. The castle is within the council area of Peterborough.
