Winlaton, Durham
Winlaton is a village in County Durham. It is now contiguous with Blaydon to its north-east. Winlaton was once at the centre of the local steel industry. In 1691, the industrialist Ambrose Crowley set up furnaces and forges here and at Winlaton Mill. The Crowley works were regarded as the largest manufactory of the kind in Europe. The gates for Buckingham Palace were forged in Winlaton. The village is within the council area of Gateshead.
