Wingfield Manor House, Derbyshire

Wingfield Manor House is a ruined mediæval great house near South Wingfield, Derbyshire. Construction of the manor began in 1441 for Sir Ralph Cromwell, Treasurer to Henry VI. The house was slighted during the Civil War. In 1678 it was bought by Immanuel Halton who built a house in the shell of the great hall. The site was abandoned in the last quarter of the 18th century though a section of the cross range has continued to be occupied as a farmhouse. The monument is in the care of English Heritage. It is within the council area of Amber Valley (Derbyshire).
