Windsor, Berkshire

Windsor is an historic market town in Berkshire. It is the site of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British monarch. The town was previously known as New Windsor, to distinguish it from the village of Old Windsor, two miles to its south, and site of a palace of the Saxon kings. Windsor Castle began as a motte-and-bailey castle around 1070. The town grew around it from the 11th century. The town is within the council area of Windsor and Maidenhead.
