Winchester, Hampshire
Winchester is a cathedral city and the county town of Hampshire. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. Winchester's Norman cathedral, the seat of one of the land's most senior bishoprics, dominates the centre of the mediæval city, while a Victorian statue of King Alfred reminds us that Winchester was the capital of Wessex and Anglo-Saxon England. The Great Hall, the only remaining part of Winchester Castle, is famous for King Arthur's Round Table, which has hung in the hall since at least 1463. The city is within the council area of Winchester (Hampshire).
