Wilton, Wiltshire

Wilton is an ancient town in Wiltshire, with a rich heritage dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Wilton Abbey was founded in 771. By the late 9th century the town was the capital of Wiltunscir. Wilton House was built on the site following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The church of St Mary and St Nicholas was built between 1841 and 1844 at the instigation of the Countess of Pembroke and her younger son Baron Herbert of Lea, designed by the Thomas Henry Wyatt in the Romanesque style, with considerable Byzantine influence. The town is within the council area of Wiltshire.
