Willesden, Middlesex
Willesden is a town in Middlesex. The earliest record to the manor of 'Willesdune' is from 939. The Church of St Mary and its Our Lady of Willesden statue were a major place of pilgrimage from the 14th to 16th centuries. The parish of Willesden remained largely rural until the opening of the Metropolitan Railway station of Willesden Green in 1879, after which it was rapidly developed. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the parish was the basis of Willesden urban district, a municipal borough from 1933. During the mid 20th century, the town became increasingly industrial and developed from a middle class suburb to a more working class area. The town is within the council area of Brent.
