Widnes, Lancashire
Widnes is a town in Lancashire. Widnes stands the north bank of the River Mersey where the estuary narrows to form the Runcorn Gap. The town is of recent origin, growing following the opening of the first chemical works in 1847. The town's name is taken from that of the ancient parish in which it grew. The town is within the council area of Halton.
