Whitewell is a former village that is now a suburban area in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It is within the townlands of Drumnadrough and Ballygolan, in the civil parish of Carnmoney. The village was established in the early 20th century to house workers from the nearby Blackstone Quarry. It was named after a well at the base of Cave Hill. It developed slowly until the mid 20th century. The development of Newtownabbey saw suburban development north and south of the village, though most of the original village was demolished in the late1960s during the construction of the M2. The name is now usually applied to the suburban area around Whitewell Road, just south of the site of the original village. The suburban area is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
