Whitehouse, Antrim
Whitehouse is a former village that is now an urban area in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It is within the townlands of White House, Drumnadrough and Ballygolan, in the civil parish of Carnmoney. Whitehouse developed from the mid 19th century as two hamlets on the shore road north of Belfast. Whitehouse Lower developed in White House townland around the 16th century fortified White House itself. Whitehouse Upper developed around flax spanning mills along the brook which forms the border of Drumnadrough and Ballygolan townlands. Both areas saw further development over the first half of the 20th century, notably with the development of Merville Garden Village in the late 1940s. It was the urban development of the whole area following the instigation of the new town of Newtownabbey which saw the two villages become the urban area of Whitehouse. The Whitewell area is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
