Whitehall, Middlesex

Whitehall is a road and area in Westminster, Middlesex. The area forms the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom, including numerous departments and ministries. It is named from the former Palace of Whitehall, the main residence of the monarch from 1530-1698. The Banqueting House (1619), designed by Inigo Jones, is the only surviving part of the palace. The Horse Guards Building (1750s) was designed by William Kent. No. 10 Downing Street is the official residence of the Prime Minster of the United Kingdom. The Cenotaph (1919), designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, is the main war memorial in Britain. Whitehall is within the council area of Westminster.
