Whiteabbey, Antrim
Whiteabbey is a former village that is now a suburban area in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It is within the townlands of White House and Jordanstown, in the civil parish of Carnmoney. The townland and village took their name from the long since ruined mediæval abbey of Druim La Croix, in the south of the townland. The village grew from the early 19th century around the foot of the Three Mile Water, an important landing site for coal shipments bound for Belfast. It also became a major site for flax spinning and the site of a large bleach works. Following the instigation of the new town of Newtownabbey, the area became largly suburbanised. The 'abbey' in 'Newtownabbey' also reflects the ruined abbey of Druim La Croix. The Whiteabbey area is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
