White City, Middlesex
White City forms the north-western part of Shepherd's Bush, Middlesex. The area was first developed as the Great White City for the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition and the 1908 Olympic Games. The complex comprised 25 palaces and halls, most covered in white stucco, a network of Venetian-style canals and the 150,000-capacity White City Stadium. Housing was developed around the complex in the 1920s and the 1930s. The exhibition halls were demolished and replaced by housing from the 1930s, though the stadium survived until 1985. The area became a centre for the media, notably the BBC, after the Second World War. It is also the location of Loftus Road, home ground of Queens Park Rangers FC. The area is within the council area of Hammersmith and Fulham.
