Whetstone, Middlesex

Whetstone is a suburban village in the north of Middlesex. It is located to the east of Totteridge, separated by Dollis Brook which marks the border with Hertfordshire. The village grew along the Great North Road in the ancient parish of Friern Barnet. Whetstone and Totteridge Station opened in 1872, encouraging suburban development in both villages. The whetstone itself is a large stone outside the Griffin public house, of uncertain origin and purpose. Whetstone is within the council area of Barnet.
