Weston Hall, Derbyshire

Weston Hall is a large 17th century mansion house at Weston-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Its origins possibly dating back to a 1550 dower house that was later extended and altered. In 1633, James I granted the manor of Weston-on-Trent to Antony Roper and it is believed that this is when a significant part of Weston Hall's construction started. Roper's impoverishment and the outbreak of the Civil War halted its construction in the 1640's. The house may have been empty when the English Civil War broke out the following year and this would explain why Parliamentary troops were garrisoned here. Thomas Fairfax the general and parliamentary commander-in-chief stayed here and a room is named after him. Bricked up doorways can be observed at first and second storeys where presumably the rest of the building was intended to be. In 1648, following Roper's death, the hall was sold to a Robert Holden. By the end of the 19th century it was extended into a three-gable structure. More recent history relates a tale from the First World War when a German prisoner of war escaped and hid in the enormous chimneys for two days before completing his escape and subsequent return to Germany. Weston Hall entered into the Cooper family in 1942 and was used for farming. In the 1950s, the Godwin family purchased the property and converted it into flats, with the lower floors being used for hospitality in the 1990s and the kitchen and bar facilities updated in 2011. In 2025 the building is known as 'The Coopers Arms'. It is within the council area of South Derbyshire (Derbyshire).
