Westminster, Middlesex

Westminster is a city in Middlesex. Westminster had developed as a separate settlement (geographically and administratively) from London prior to the Norman Conquest. In the 11th century, Edward the Confessor began the construction of an abbey at Westminster and a palace between the river and the abbey. The Palace of Westminster was the primary royal residence of the Kings of England between the eleventh century and 1512. The Parliament of England and then of the United Kingdom, has met there since the 13th century. Westminster became a city in 1540. Westminster Abbey (1245) is the former abbey church. The city is within the council area of Westminster.
