Westhoughton, Lancashire

Westhoughton is a town in Lancashire. Once a centre for mining, cotton-spinning and textile manufacture, today the town is predominantly residential. From 1894-1974, for local government purposes, the town was the basis of Westhoughton urban district. Westhoughton Town Hall (1903) is in the Renaissance style. A plaque to commemorate the life of the locally-born actor Robert Shaw is outside the town hall. The town is within the council area of Bolton.
