West Kensington, Middlesex

West Kensington is a former village (North End) that is now an urban area in the north-east of Fulham, Middlesex. Once glebe land belonging to Fulham rectory, by the mid 19th century a sizeable settlement had developed in the north-east of the parish of Fulham, including grand villas, cottages, some terraces and St Mary's Church (1835). North End (Fulham) station opened in 1874, following which William Henry Gibbs and John P. Flew began large-scale development. They marketed the area as 'West Kensington' and persuaded the District Railway to rename the railway station as 'West Kensington' in 1877. The area is within the council area of Hammersmith and Fulham.
