West Bromwich, Staffordshire
West Bromwich is a market town in Staffordshire, within the Black Country. It is listed in Domesday as 'Bromwic'. The 'West' may have been added to distinguish it from Castle Bromwich. The village began to grow once it became a stop on the coaching route between London and Shrewsbury from 1727. In the 19th century, coal deposits were discovered and the town grew rapidly as an industrial centre. For local government purposes, from 1889-1966, the town was the basis of West Bromwich county borough. West Bromwich Town Hall (1874) is in the Italian Gothic Style. Bromwich Hall is a mediæval domestic building (a hall house) built by Richard de Marnham around 1270. The town is within the council area of Sandwell.
