Welling, Kent
Welling is a suburban town in Kent, lying on the Roman road Watling Street between Shooters Hill and Bexleyheath. The earliest reference is from 1362 to ‘Wellyngs’. Welling developed as a coaching halt along the London to Dover road. Coaching inns (including the extant Nag’s Head and Guy, Earl of Warwick) were accompanied by ribbon development of premises belonging to craftsmen and tradesmen, with farms and market gardens behind. Welling station opened in 1895 but Welling remained predominantly rural until the inter-war period when it saw large-scale suburban housing development. The present day shopping centre stretches for a mile along the High Street and Bellegrove Road (Watling Street). The town is within the council area of Bexley.
