Wednesfield, Staffordshire

Wednesfield is a town in Staffordshire. The town's name comes from the Old English 'Wodnesfeld' (Woden's Field), one of the few town names in Britain named from a pagan deity. The Wyrley and Essington Canal running through the town was opened in 1797. For local government purposes, from 1895-1966, the town formed the basis of Wednesfield urban district. The Church of St Thomas dates from 1750. The town is within the council area of Wolverhampton.
