Waverley Abbey, Surrey

Waverley Abbey is a ruined Cisterican abbey near Farnham, Surrey. Founded in 1128, it was the first Cistercian house to be established in England. The abbey was suppressed in 1536 following which it was largely demolished. The most substantial remains are the vaulted undercroft of the lay brother's refectory and the walls of the monk's dormitory. The remains of the chapter house and traces of the north and south transepts of the abbey church also survive. Waverley Abbey House was built in 1723 in the northern portion of the former abbey precinct. It is within the council area of Waverley (Surrey).
