Watling Street is a historic route, running from Dover to Wroxeter, including a section through Hertfordshire. First used by the ancient Britons, the road was later paved by the Romans. Watling Street enters Hertfordshire at Elstree, passes to the west of St Albans and then through Redbourn and Markyate before entering Bedfordshire just south-east of Dunstable. The section of Watling Street immediately to the south-east of Dunstable, passing through Stipers Hill and Downside, forms part of the modern-day A5183. This section of Watling Street is within the council area of Central Bedfordshire.
