Watling Street, Middlesex
Watling Street is a historic route, running from Dover to Wroxeter, including a section through Middlesex. First used by the ancient Britons, the road was later paved by the Romans. In ancient times Watling Street is supposed to have crossed the Thames at a ford near Westminster, though once the Roman's built the first London Bridge then this became the main river crossing. The precise course of Watling Street through central London is a subject of debate, though the A5 from Marble Arch north-westwards to where it leaves Middlesex at Elstree is part of the route. The section of Watling Street immediately to the south of Elstree forms part of the modern-day A5. This section of Watling Street is within the council area of Harrow.
