Watling Street, Leicestershire / Warwickshire

Watling Street is a historic route, running from Dover to Wroxeter, including a section which forms the Leicestershire - Warwickshire border. First used by the ancient Britons, the road was later paved by the Romans. Watling Street forms part of the Leicestershire - Warwickshire border from Newton (Warwickshire) to Witherley (Leicestershire) - all of this being part of the modern-day A5. This may date from the Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum (878-890). Watling Street crosses the Fosse Way at High Cross. This section of Watling Street is within the council areas of Rugby (Warwickshire) and Harborough (Leicestershire).
