Waterside, Londonderry

Waterside is an urban area, lying on the west bank of the River Bann in Coleraine, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Waterside, in the civil parish of Killowen. A castle on the west bank of the River Bann was first built around the 12th century, though little now remains. The River Bann was first bridged close to the castle in the 13th century, on the site of the current 19th-century Coleraine Bridge. Around 1609, the Clothworkers Company was awarded the land on the west of the River Bann and developed the Waterside and Killowen areas. Jackson Hall (aka The Manor House) was originally built by Thomas Jackson around 1680. It was demolished in 1982. The Clothworkers Building (1845) dates from a similar period as the Coleraine Bridge. The Old Court House dates from 1852. At the start of the 20th century, the Waterside comprised a few streets around the western end of Coleraine Bridge. It saw significant development in the first half of the 20th century and large-scale suburban expansion from the mid 20th century. The area is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
