Waterside, Londonderry

The Waterside is that part of the city of Londonderry which lies on the east bank of the River Foyle, in County Londonderry. It is within the townlands of Clooney and Gobnascale, in the civil parish of Clondermot. The area developed following the opening of the first bridge across the Foyle in 1791, prior to that being little more than a ferry landing. The building of Ebrington barracks in 1839 and the arrival of the railway in 1852 prompted major growth of the area, with the construction of new quays and industrial buildings. It then saw a major period of expansion from the mid 20th century. St Columb's Church (RC) was designed by J.J. McCarthy and opened in 1841. Waterside Presbyterian Church dates from 1866. All Saints Clooney Church (C of I) was built around 1867. St Columb’s Park House was built in 1788 by Lieutenant John Rea of the Royal Navy. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
