Wapping, Middlesex
Wapping is a former hamlet that is now a metropolitan district in south-east Middlesex. It is part of the East End of London, lying on the River Thames between St Katherine's and Shadwell. Wapping Marsh was drained around 1540 and the settlement developed along the river wall. The maritime character of Wapping was changed by the construction of the London Docks (1800-1815), with much of the old settlement destroyed. Devastated during the Second World War, from the 1980s Wapping saw large-scale residential redevelopment. A number of the 'watermen's stairs', including Wapping Old Stairs, give access to the Thames foreshore. Much of St John's Church (1756) was destroyed in the war, but the tower remains a local landmark. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
