Wantage, Berkshire
Wantage is a historic market town in Berkshire. Wantage is believed to have been a small Roman settlement but it is known to history only from the days of King Alfred the Great, who was born here during the reign of his father, Æthelwulf, King of the West Saxons. King Alfred was born at the royal hall in Wantage in 849. The statue of Alfred the Great, in the market place, was sculpted by Count Gleichen, a relative of Queen Victoria's. The town is within the council area of Vale of White Horse (Oxfordshire).
