Wanstead, Essex
Wanstead is a suburban village in Essex. It is recorded in a charter of 1065 as 'Wenstede'. The village began to attract wealthy residents from the mid-18th century. High-class suburban development began around 1860, after the opening of Snaresbrook railway station, and continued until the First World War. The church of St Mary the Virgin (1790) was deisgned by Thomas Hardwick. Christ Church (1861) was designed by Sir Glbert Scott. Wanstead Park comprises the former gardens of Wanstead House (1715-1825), itself built to replace the ancient manor house of Wanstead Hall. The village is within the council area of Redbridge.
