Walworth, Surrey

Walworth is a former village that is now a metropolitan district, lying between Newington and Camberwell, in Surrey. A Saxon manor, it is listed in Domesday as 'Waleorde'. Walworth, long a rural area producing fruit and vegetables, saw development from the late 18th century. Surrey Square was built in the 1790s by the architect Michael Searles. St Peter’s Church (1825) was built in the neo-classical style to a design by Sir John Soane. Paslay Park lies on part of the site of the Royal Surrey Gardens, location of the Surrey Zoological Gardens (1831-1856) and Surrey Music Hall (1856-1861). Since ancient times Walworth was part of the parish of Newington and hence, for local government purposes, became part of Southwark metropolitan borough from 1900-1965. The district is within the council area of Southwark.
