Walthamstow, Essex
Walthamstow is a town in Essex. Walthamstow, described as 'Wilcumsetou' in Domesday, was a Saxon manor and later a parish. Until the late 19th century it remained a rural parish with the village of Walthamstow and several large estates. Following the arrival of the railways in the 1870s, Walthamstow quickly grew to become a sizable town. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Walthamstow urban district, a municipal borough from 1929. St Mary's Church dates from the 12th century. Water House (1762) was home to Arts and Crafts designer William Morris in his teenage years and now houses the William Morris Gallery. The town is within the council area of Waltham Forest.
