Wakefield, Yorkshire

Wakefield is a city in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It stands on the banks of the River Calder on the eastern edge of the Pennines. Wakefield was an important market town and centre for wool, later developing through trade in corn, coal mining and textiles. Wakefield Cathedral dates from the 14th century and was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century. The Wakefield Cycle is a collection of 32 mystery plays, performed from the 14th century. The city is within the council area of Wakefield.
