Vauxhall, Surrey
Vauxhall is a Thames-side urban area in the south-west of the metropolitian district of Lambeth, Surrey. The name is believed to derive from Falkes de Breauté, lord of the manor of South Lambeth from 1233 who built Falkes’ Hall, later called 'Fox Hall'. The name came into common usage due to the opening of Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, a leading venue for public entertainment in London from the mid-17th century to the mid-19th century. The gardens closed in 1859, around the time that Vauxhall was becoming subsumed by the growth of Lambeth. The present Vauxhall Bridge opened in May 1906, replacing the 19th-century Regent Bridge. The present-day Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens lie on part of the site of the original gardens. Vauxhall was part of the ancient parish of Lambeth and from 1900-1965, for local government purposes, was part of Lambeth metropolitan borough. The area is within the council area of Lambeth.
