Vale of Taunton Deane, Somerset

The Vale of Taunton Deane is a fertile, low-lying region in the south-west of Somerset. It is known for its rich soil and mild climate. It forms a natural basin sheltered by three prominent hill ranges: the Quantocks to the east, the Brendon Hills to the west, and the Blackdown Hills to the south. The phrase "Vale of Taunton Deane" has a long history as a descriptive term. In 1609/1610, the cartographer and surveyor John Norden famously described the "great vale of Taunton Deane" as the "paradise of England". The vale is within the council area of Somerset.
