Upton, Essex

Upton is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in West Ham, Essex. The earliest reference is from 1203 as 'Hupington'. The 17th century Ham House was demolished in 1872 and its grounds became West Ham Park, around the time that Upton was being developed for housing. The Spotted Dog public house dates from the late 15th century. The area is within the council area of Newham.
