Upper Norwood, Surrey

Upper Norwood forms the north-eastern part of the larger suburb of Norwood in Surrey. The wider area was once occupied by an oak forest known as the Great North Wood, "Norwood" being a contraction of "North Wood". Upper Norwood is situated along the London clay ridge known as Beulah Hill. Most housing dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, with large detached properties along the ridge and smaller dwellings on the slopes. The reconstruction of the Crystal Palace on Sydenham Hill (1854) made Upper Norwood a highly fashionable place of residence. The eastern part of the area is also known as Crystal Palace. The Church of St John the Evangelist (1887) is a notable example of the work of John Loughborough Pearson. St John's College was founded in 1855. The area is within the council area of Croydon.
